Rainbow Foundation Champions Active Ageing at Erddig parkrun
28th November 2025
One in four older adults fall each year, and when we stop moving, even simple tasks like climbing stairs or using the bathroom without help become harder.
But frailty isn’t inevitable. With the right support it can be prevented and, in some cases, even reversed. Regular movement reduces fall risk by up to 30%, boosts mental health, and helps older adults stay independent.
That’s why members of the Rainbow Foundation’s award-winning Active Futures and Fit Futures programmes joined Erddig Parkrun, alongside clients from its Enhanced Social Prescribing service. For many, this was more than a run, it was a celebration of strength, confidence, and new friendships.
“Exercise isn’t easy. Sticking with it is even harder. But with the right support, it becomes possible and even enjoyable,” said Caroline Tudor-James, Chief Executive Officer of the Rainbow Foundation who volunteered on the day. “Our clients proved that by showing up, moving together, and connecting with nature.”
Individuals like 74-year-old Julia who after retiring from a long career in nursing, faced declining health, chronic pain, and a reliance on walking sticks. Following multiple surgeries and a hip replacement, she discovered Rainbow’s Active Futures programme. After 12 weeks, Julia experienced life-changing progress including improved mobility, increased confidence and pain relief which involved a recovery so remarkable she avoided further surgery.
Two years on, Julia still attends the Rainbow Foundation’s weekly Fit Futures classes and was able to develop the stamina and self-belief to take on the Erddig Parkrun. She says: “It was very motivating to be able to take part and although I was nervous, I felt really good when I completed it and I will now be confident to continue.”
Among the participants was also 73-year-old Fit Futures participant Abbie who ran with her nine-year-old granddaughter and came first in her age group, a fantastic achievement. Julia, Abbie and many other participants discovered the joy of taking part, experiencing the uplifting benefits of being outdoors and connecting with others. Several have already pledged to return, as both runners and as volunteers.
Rob Mackey, Regional Ambassador for parkrun in North Wales, added: “We’re thrilled to see Rainbow clients joining us. We use the term ‘participants’ to reflect our inclusive ethos. Walkers, joggers, runners and volunteers are all equally valued at parkrun. We look forward to seeing them again at Erddig, and hopefully at other parkrun events across North Wales.”
About Active Futures
The Rainbow Foundation is delighted to announce the next phase of its award-winning Active Futures programme is back and starting this December with pre-assessments and introductory sessions ahead of full classes in January. This free, twice-weekly initiative is designed to help older adults reduce pain, combat frailty, and regain confidence through movement.
Endorsed by local GPs, just two hours of exercise per week can significantly ease joint pain and improve mobility. Active Futures goes further, offering physiotherapist-led sessions that build strength, enhance balance, and boost overall wellbeing in a safe, friendly environment. Each class is structured to support participants at every stage, ensuring progress feels achievable and enjoyable.
Falls remain one of the biggest risks to independence as we age. Building strength and balance now means fewer injuries in later life and the mental health benefits of being active outdoors are priceless. The Rainbow Foundation’s Active Futures programmes are making a measurable difference with:
- 288 older people supported across Wrexham
- 100% improvement in levels of strength
- 72% lowered their Clinical Frailty Score
- 79% reporting improved mental wellbeing
- 80% progressing to Fit Futures; embedding long-term healthy habits and social connections
Those who want to feel stronger, more confident, and connected are encouraged to join the Rainbow Foundation’s Active Futures and Fit Futures programmes. For anyone needing support with mental health, the charity also offers a Social Prescribing service available through GP surgeries.
